What the Certified Yoga Instructor Credential Is
When people ask "what is Yoga Instructor?", the answer on this site is specific: the Certified Yoga Instructor credential earned through the International Sports Sciences Association (ISSA) Yoga 200 course and its final examination. It is a teacher-training certification built around 200 hours of coursework, practice and assignments, delivered online, and culminating in a final assessment you complete from home.
The "200" describes the training load, not the test. It is not a 200-question exam and not a 200-hour sitting. Candidates sometimes misread the number, and it is worth getting right before you plan your calendar. For a broader look at how the credential is framed, see our overview of Yoga Instructor certification and the companion explainer What Is Yoga Instructor Certification?
Name Confusion: What This Is Not
The phrase "yoga instructor" is used by many programs, and several credentials share similar labels. To keep your preparation accurate, note what the ISSA Yoga 200 credential is not:
- Not Yoga Fundamentals. ISSA's shorter Yoga Fundamentals offering is a different product from the Yoga 200 certification.
- Not a personal-trainer certification. Personal-training exams follow their own rules, question counts and renewal cycles; none of those carry over.
- Not a legacy Vinyasa-course specification. Older course descriptions with different structures should not be used to plan for the current Yoga 200 program.
- Not an NCCPT exam. NCCPT's own FAQ says its separate yoga-instructor examination is no longer offered. That does not discontinue ISSA Yoga 200, and NCCPT's testing rules do not apply to it.
Definitions of the term itself are covered in Yoga Instructor Meaning and What Does Yoga Instructor Stand For?
Who Issues It and How the Course Works
ISSA administers both the course and the course examination. The program is delivered through ISSA's online platform, and the issuer's materials describe learning outcomes spanning yoga history and philosophy, anatomy and physiology, meditation and pranayama, sequencing, postures, cueing and class structure, and professional and ethical business preparation.
The program accepts yoga practitioners at different experience levels, so you do not need to be an advanced practitioner to enroll. To finish, you complete the required curriculum and quizzes and submit current CPR/AED certification. A suggested ten-week schedule exists, but that is a pacing guide, not a ten-domain exam structure. ISSA also identifies Yoga 200 as an RYS 200 course, a point we return to in the Yoga Alliance section below.
The paid Yoga 200 Hour Teacher Training Manual and Asana Guidebook are part of the learning materials. Their full contents are only visible to enrolled students, so this article does not describe them in detail. For a fuller breakdown of eligibility, see Yoga Instructor Requirements.
The Nine Preparation Topics
ISSA's curriculum landing page and its launch announcement name the preparation scope. We organize it into nine headings below. Treat them as unweighted preparation topics, not an official exam blueprint: ISSA has not published percentages for them, and we do not claim any.
| Topic | What to Be Ready For |
|---|---|
| Teaching & Cueing Principles | Clear verbal instruction, safe adjustments in language, adapting cues to different bodies |
| Sequencing | Building a logical class arc, warm-up to peak to cool-down, pose ordering rationale |
| Anatomy & Physiology | Joint actions, major muscle groups, breath mechanics, injury-aware modification |
| Meditation & Pranayama | Breathing techniques, contraindications, guiding seated practice |
| Yoga History & Philosophy | Origins, major traditions and texts, key concepts and terminology |
| Ethics | Scope of practice, student boundaries, respectful conduct |
| Professional Development | Business basics, liability awareness, building a teaching practice |
| The Asanas | Alignment, benefits, contraindications and variations for the posture library |
| Signature Foundational Yoga Class | Designing and describing a complete beginner-appropriate class |
An alternate grouping appears on ISSA's product page: Asana & Sequencing, Anatomy & Physiology, Business of Yoga, Yoga History & Philosophy, Teaching Methodology, and Meditation & Breathwork. That is the same course organized differently, not six additional domains and not a competing weighted outline. Our deeper walkthrough is in Yoga Instructor Exam Domains: Complete Guide to All 9 Content Areas.
The Asanas and Anatomy: Where Safety Lives
These two areas overlap constantly, and questions rarely treat them in isolation.
- Know why a pose is modified, not just that it is.
- Connect breath cues to the physical action they support.
- Be able to name contraindications that call for a different option or a referral to a qualified professional.
Teaching, Cueing and the Signature Class
These are the most applied parts of the course. They test whether you can translate knowledge into instruction.
- Practice phrasing cues in plain, inclusive language.
- Outline a foundational class with a clear opening, progression and closing.
- Be ready to justify your sequencing choices in writing.
How the Final Assessment Works
The Yoga 200 final is taken online, at home. It is open-book, open-note and untimed, and one free retake is included. The older course curriculum describes multiple-choice questions on the examination.
Here is what we could not verify, and so will not claim: an exact current question count, a public passing percentage, and a Yoga 200-specific pass rate. ISSA's general final-exam help article gives cross-course question-count ranges and typical completion times, but those are not Yoga 200 specifications and are not a timer for this test. If you see a precise pass rate or cutoff quoted elsewhere for this credential, treat it with caution. Our pages on the pass rate and passing score explain what is and is not known.
Cost, Time Limits and Prerequisites
| Item | What the Sources Show |
|---|---|
| Current tuition | USD $1,188 paid once, including the online final |
| Older promotion | A USD $988 pay-in-full offer appeared on an older curriculum page; it is historical, not the current canonical price |
| Training volume | 200 hours of coursework, practice and assignments |
| Completion window | Current product states six months; the identity-anchor marketing page promotes no deadline |
| Prerequisites | Complete curriculum and quizzes; submit current CPR/AED certification |
| Retakes | One free retake of the final |
The completion-window discrepancy is real: one page says six months and another promotes no deadline. Your actual enrollment agreement governs your access, so read it before you pay. For a full cost analysis, including what extras to budget for, read Yoga Instructor Certification Cost.
Because the exam is taken online on your own schedule, there are no fixed testing windows in the way that proctored exams have them; details are discussed in Yoga Instructor Exam Dates.
ISSA Certification vs. Yoga Alliance Registration
This is the point candidates most often get wrong. ISSA identifies Yoga 200 as an RYS 200 course, and successful graduates may separately apply for Yoga Alliance RYT 200 registration. ISSA certification is not automatic RYT registration. They are two different steps with separate applications, and Yoga Alliance registration has its own separate renewal process.
| Feature | ISSA Certified Yoga Instructor | Yoga Alliance RYT 200 |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | Certificate earned by completing Yoga 200 and its final | Registry listing you apply for after graduating |
| Automatic? | Earned through course completion | No; separate application required |
| Renewal | ISSA's process (see below) | Yoga Alliance's own process |
Renewal and Keeping the Credential Current
ISSA's renewal guide explicitly gives Yoga 200 certificates three-year validity. It lists three requirements: 20 CEUs, current CPR/AED, and a USD $99 renewal fee, which may be waived with qualifying ISSA CEUs.
One wrinkle: the same general guide's early-renewal FAQ refers to a new two-year period. That is inconsistent with the Yoga-specific three-year figure, and we have no basis to resolve it. The safe approach is to follow the expiration date printed on your certificate and the Yoga-specific instructions, not the generic personal-trainer cycle. Keep your CPR/AED current throughout, since it is both an entry and a renewal requirement.
Careers, Pay and Professional Boundaries
Certified Yoga Instructors teach in studios, gyms, community centers, corporate wellness settings and online, and some build independent businesses. Hiring practices vary by employer: some ask for Yoga Alliance registration, some want liability coverage or a teaching audition, and many value CPR/AED certification. Check the specific requirements of the places you want to work.
We do not quote salary numbers because none are verified for this credential, and we will not promise employment or income. Pay depends heavily on location, class size, whether you are employed or self-employed, and how many classes you can realistically teach. For a grounded discussion, see Yoga Instructor Salary Guide, Yoga Instructor Jobs and Is the Yoga Instructor Certification Worth It?
Key Takeaway
The Ethics and Professional Development topics are not filler. A yoga teacher is not a physician or physical therapist. Stay within scope: offer options and modifications, never diagnose, and refer students with injuries or medical conditions to appropriate professionals.
A Domain-by-Domain Preparation Order
Since the final is open-book and untimed, your goal is mastery and fast navigation, not memorization marathons. This sequencing ties each stretch of work to the domain that benefits most from that timing. The 10-week suggested schedule is a pacing aid, so adapt it to your own six-month or flexible window. For fuller planning, see the Yoga Instructor Study Guide.

Frequently Asked Questions
It refers to 200 hours of coursework, practice and assignments. It does not mean 200 exam questions or a 200-hour test.
No. The final is taken online at home, is open-book and open-note, and is untimed. One free retake is included.
Not automatically. ISSA identifies Yoga 200 as an RYS 200 course, and graduates may separately apply for RYT 200 registration. That registration has its own renewal process.
Current tuition is USD $1,188 paid once, including the online final. An older curriculum page advertised $988, but that was a historical promotion and should not be treated as the current price.
ISSA's renewal guide gives Yoga 200 certificates three-year validity, with 20 CEUs, current CPR/AED and a $99 renewal fee, which may be waived with qualifying ISSA CEUs. A general FAQ mentions a two-year period, so follow your certificate's expiration date and Yoga-specific instructions.
